After completing work on James Brown’s home in the lower ninth ward he invited our volunteers to a crawfish boil at his place.
It was a night of amazing food, singing, dancing and love. Their family was our family and for us that’s what it’s all about.
Our volunteers that stay at the volunteer house in Bywater are able to get a real New Orleans experience as they live in an amazing part of town. Vaughn’s, a local bar that features Kermit Ruffins once a week, is just around the corner and last Thursday our volunteers met actor “Steve Zahn” partying with locals outside.
Our volunteers also recently attended a private rehearsal for the TBC Brass Band hosted by a local named Otis who sat in and played the drums. It was an amazing evening.
A local lady who goes by the name “Miss Peanut” had lost her restaurant after the storm. For the past two years she has been cooking out of her home and only those that have heard about her through word of mouth know where her home is. Her cooking is the best we’ve tasted in New Orleans so we’re lucky to have found her.
To help her out and provide our volunteers with a real New Orleans experience we’ve made a point of taking them over to her home once a week. We then go to City Park for a picnic and a little relaxation time.
Rutgers University engineering students helped OnSite with paint and de-construction work this week. Thanks again for all your hard work!
On Monday March 16th 50 Jewish college students helped OnSite build a peacock coop and clean the grounds at the Sebastopol Plantation in St. Bernard, LA.
Our volunteers had a blast this year attending the parades and walking the streets of the French Quarter during Mardi Gras.

For a week OnSite had student volunteers from University of Michigan come down to help. Not only were they able to volunteer, but they also experienced Mardi Gras Day walking the streets of the French Quarter.

On Wednesday February 18th the Educational Travel Conference sent us a group of 40 volunteers for the day. This group worked on two homes where they painted, hung drywall and cleared garbage and debris.
The owner of one of the homes, James Brown, stopped by in the morning to share his story after the storm.
OnSite was happy to have another team of student volunteers come down from University of Western Ontario for one week.
