picnics, dinners & nights on the town

Posted on October 25th, 2010 in New Orleans, Outings, Tours and Events by onsite

One of the reasons we started organizing volunteers in New Orleans was to expose them to the local culture, food and people. This season we continued to have weekly picnics, dinners and nights out so that our volunteers would see first hand why it was so important to help this city get back on track. Many fell in love with New Orleans in the process.

Thanks again to all the volunteers…this wonderful city would not be what it is today without your help.

Mardi Gras & The Saints…who dat?

Posted on June 29th, 2010 in New Orleans, Outings, Tours and Events by onsite

The New Orleans Saints winning the Super Bowl this year made the month of February one to remember. Just about everyone in the greater New Orleans area was out for the street party. What an amazing thing to happen to such a special city.

Volunteers do some “EXTRA” work

Posted on April 19th, 2009 in New Orleans, Outings, Tours and Events by onsite

On Wednesday March 25th we took some of our volunteers out to watch the filming of a new HBO series named “Treme” at Vaughn’s Bar in Bywater. Four of our volunteers were lucky enough to be placed in the scene and also had a chance to meet Elvis Costello who was playing himself in the pilot episode. Here are some photos:

A boil to remember

Posted on March 21st, 2009 in New Orleans, Outings, Tours and Events by onsite

After completing work on James Brown’s home in the lower ninth ward he invited our volunteers to a crawfish boil at his place.

It was a night of amazing food, singing, dancing and love. Their family was our family and for us that’s what it’s all about.

Vaughn’s & other local stuff

Posted on March 21st, 2009 in New Orleans, Outings, Tours and Events by onsite

Our volunteers that stay at the volunteer house in Bywater are able to get a real New Orleans experience as they live in an amazing part of town. Vaughn’s, a local bar that features Kermit Ruffins once a week, is just around the corner and last Thursday our volunteers met actor “Steve Zahn” partying with locals outside.

Our volunteers also recently attended a private rehearsal for the TBC Brass Band hosted by a local named Otis who sat in and played the drums. It was an amazing evening.

Weekly picnics with Miss Peanut

Posted on March 21st, 2009 in New Orleans, Outings, Tours and Events by onsite

A local lady who goes by the name “Miss Peanut” had lost her restaurant after the storm. For the past two years she has been cooking out of her home and only those that have heard about her through word of mouth know where her home is. Her cooking is the best we’ve tasted in New Orleans so we’re lucky to have found her.

To help her out and provide our volunteers with a real New Orleans experience we’ve made a point of taking them over to her home once a week. We then go to City Park for a picnic and a little relaxation time.

Our volunteers had a blast this year attending the parades and walking the streets of the French Quarter during Mardi Gras.

Photos from Jan

Posted on December 15th, 2008 in New Orleans, Outings, Tours and Events, Relief Work, Volunteer Testimonials by onsite

For the months of October and November we had a long term volunteer named Jan from Yukon, Canada. During her stay she restored some windows and helped out at ARNO.

Jan has traveled the world and found New Orleans to be the friendliest city she has ever visited. She loved the artsy neighborhood of Bywater where our volunteer house is located. We took Jan to Vaughn’s to see Kermit Ruffins play, Lafayette to dance to some live Zydeco music and Bacchanal Wine for their weekly wine tasting.

Showing our volunteers around

Posted on June 16th, 2008 in New Orleans, Outings, Tours and Events by onsite

After the work day is done we make a point of showing our volunteers around the city. This way they can get a better feel of what the people, food and culture is all about.

Here are some photos from the month of May.

It’s not a picnic without some spicy crawfish.

We saw this cool vintage VW Bus parked in the French Quarter.
It was covered with beads and other decorative items.

Since the storm the saying below has become very common.
It was painted onto one of the levies. It translates to
“New Orleans gave me patience and passion”.

These signs are now being posted on many homes indicating
that the city will be tearing them down shortly.
