Cooking Up a Storm

Posted on March 23rd, 2008 in Community Service, New Orleans by onsite

Most Tuesdays we head over to the Community Center of Saint Bernard Parish where we cook and serve dinner. On Tuesday February 26th our volunteers cooked up one of the best meals the residents had eaten there. Special thanks to Eli for heading the kitchen crew.

A New Orleans Adoption

Posted on February 16th, 2008 in Community Service, New Orleans by onsite

Something that has become somewhat of a weekly occurrence is for our volunteers to spend 1 afternoon a week at ARNO (Animal Rescue of New Orleans). This particular visit our volunteer Rebecca had her mind set on adopting a puppy so the first 1/2 hour we helped her choose the perfect one to bring home.

I think she’s found one!

As many of you know, I (Genevieve) have a love for cats and so I spend my time with the kitties, which there are dozens of.

Working with Unity

Posted on February 2nd, 2008 in Community Service, New Orleans by onsite

On Tuesday, January 29th we had a group from Wisconsin join us. While a few of them worked in the Lower 9th Ward most of them accompanied Genevieve in helping to deliver donated furniture with Unity Housing Plus. A hotel in New Orleans East donated dozens of sofa beds, chairs, pillows, sheets and comforters. We first loaded up the moving truck then went around the city delivering the items to New Orleans residents who have just been taken off of the streets and put into apartments. For more information on Unity Housing Plus and their programs please visit their website at http://www.unitygno.org/

Adopt a “Katrina Dog” - video at ARNO

Posted on January 26th, 2008 in Community Service, New Orleans by onsite

OnSite volunteers look forward to helping out at the Animal Rescue of New Orleans, otherwise known as ARNO. They also feel a sadness as there are so many great animals who were abandoned after Hurricane Katrina (or born in the following years to these abandoned animals) who need “forever homes”. This is a video taken at ARNO of the dogs who live there who are looking for new families. For information on pets awaiting adoption and for photos please visit ARNO’s website at http://animalrescueneworleans.org/adoptions.html

Adopt a “Katrina Cat” - video at ARNO

Posted on January 26th, 2008 in Community Service, New Orleans by onsite

From time to time OnSite Relief brings their volunteers to help out at Animal Rescue of New Orleans, otherwise known as ARNO. The shelter was started in October 2005 a few months following Hurricane Katrina to save the pets abandoned after the storm. In their first few months ARNO rescued over 6,000 dogs and cats. They still have dozens of animals that need “forever homes”. Please check out their website at http://animalrescueneworleans.org/adoptions.html for photos and details on adoption.

Posted on January 25th, 2008 in Community Service, New Orleans by onsite

OnSite’s volunteers headed over to the Community Center of Saint Bernard after a long day of work on Tuesday, January 22nd. We started by collapsing and removing boxes from the food ware house and then cooked and served dinner to the local residents. On the menu was turkey with gravy, turkey soup, green beans, bean salad, dinner rolls, spinach salad, raw oysters, mashed potatoes and mixed pastries for dessert.

Here is our “cardboard train”!!

For a bit of a change we took our volunteers to help out at ARNO (Animal Rescue of New Orleans). Barb, Jim along with our director, Genevieve cleaned cat cages and then walked a few dogs while Madison, Eliza, Emma and Nick spent the entire afternoon with the dogs. ARNO was started after Hurricane Katrina to deal with the thousands of abandoned pets from all over the city. For more on ARNO please visit their website at http://animalrescueneworleans.org/
